Airport Security Training Reaches a New Plateau
June 9, 2003
Under fire for lax airport security, the U.S. Transportation Security Administration (TSA) has contracted Lockheed Martin Systems Management, Marlton, NJ, to develop an e-learning system using the Plateau 4 Learning Management System from Plateau (www.plateau.com), Arlington, VA. A branch of the Department of Homeland Security, TSA is charged with training its personnel on anti-terrorism detection and ensuring that they are kept up to date on new threats. All training of airport baggage and passenger screeners will now be managed on a single online platform.
TSA will use Plateau software to manage e-learning, traditional classroom courses and on-the-job training, starting with 55,000 U.S. airport screeners and eventually expanding to Federal Air Marshals, Federal Flight Deck Officers and others. The learning management system will enable TSA to create customized learning development plans for employees based on their job position, and it will automatically alert workers by email when threats arise or training procedures are modified.
By consolidating all its learning and knowledge readiness initiatives on one platform, TSA will have a holistic view of agency readiness will allowing individual regions and airports to manage their own training. The initial $8.9 million Lockheed Martin contract has four option years.
