Rules Engine Tanks Up on Java
June 17, 2003
JRules 4.5 is the latest business rules engine for Java applications to emerge from Mountain View, CA-based iLog (www.ilog.com). Business rules are the essential component used by software applications to make decisions in business processes. JRules 4.5 is designed to let enterprises centralize the development and management of business rules across all applications within that enterprise.
The new version of JRules includes features such as Ruleflow, Decision Tables, a graphical user interface, support for Web services, role-based security, built-in error corrections and the ability to execute rules in a fixed sequence to improve speed. Ruleflow lets users determine the order and conditions under which business rules are executed. Decision Tables let users lay out multiple, similar business rules in a grid instead of as a less users-friendly, top-down procedure. Using a decision table, a user can clearly determine what actions should be taken depending on the results of one or more business conditions.
JRules is a Java application and includes an API for integration with any other J2EE application. Web services supports integration with any business application via familiar XML and SOAP communication protocols. JRules includes a rules repository, similar to other types of content repositories, where business rules can be stored, edited and managed. Rules and rule procedures are created graphically, opening up the system to a wide variety of users. According to iLog, the JRules engine can process up to 100,000 transactions per hour and is easily embedded within larger business applications.
