Document Services Make a Flashy Debut

OIT is still in the process of deploying its Web services solutions. Buchart says only 15 percent of DocFinity has been enabled for Web services so far, although that 15 percent includes the system's most heavily used modules, including imaging, workflow, report archiving and document management functions. Buchart declined to estimate how long it will take to make the whole of DocFinity Web services ready, but he says the conversion to J2EE will be completed by the end of the year.
"OIT is ahead of the curve in moving their product to Web services," says Jim Just, a principal with iMerge Consulting (www.imergeconsult.com) based in Warrenton, VA. "OIT can move pretty quickly due to the tight integration in DocFinity. The Flash approach provides a very light client, is richer than HTML and is easier to program. Web services eliminate the need to resort to middleware systems to effect integration between DocFinity and other applications." Just speculates that, as far as Web services are concerned, OIT's development may even be ahead of big players such as FileNet.
According to Just, OIT best advantage is in large enterprise deployments. "For small-scale systems, OIT doesn't have a price advantage compared to its rivals, but large DocFinity systems top out at a lower overall cost," he says.
OIT maintains three product levels, Workgroup Edition, Enterprise Edition and Global Edition, and the company says it has installed systems supporting as many as 90,000 seats. DocFinity is compliant with rules regarding the pharmaceutical industry (21 CFR 210, 211, 810), health care industry (HIPAA and HCFA), and its built-in storage management helps in the product's compliance with financial industry regulations.
The combination of low cost, a complete feature set and compliance with regulatory needs makes OIT's DocFinity a robust yet flexible and cost-effective document imaging and management system for large enterprises.
