Microsoft Upgrades Content Management Server for .Net
October 15, 2002
Upgrading its Web content management software and preparing for
.Net-based Web services, Redmond, WA-based Microsoft (www.microsoft.com)
has released Content Management Server 2002.
The Enterprise Edition of Content Management Server 2002 works with the
rest of Microsoft's e-business suite, which includes Commerce Server,
BizTalk Server, SharePoint Portal Server, SQL Server and Exchange 2000
Enterprise Server. The upgrades are said to enhance user productivity,
beef up developer support and enhance compliance with industry standards
including XML.
To make the product easier to use, Content Management Server now
integrates directly with Microsoft Word, letting users publish documents
from the world's most popular word processing system. While many
competing systems already integrate with Word, CMS 2002 also provides
Wizard-driven publishing tasks that let nontechnical users easily submit
common content types while the software automatically takes care of
publishing and archiving chores.
To simplify the development of content management applications, Content
Management Server 2002 integrates with VisualStudio.Net. The integration
provides an array of prebuilt and extensible server controls and support
for source code management. New placeholder objects support XML content,
and the system will also support for XML-based Web services and the .Net
Framework. This will let customers expose Content Management Server
content and features as Web services for content syndication and to
integrate Web sites and content with other applications.
CMS 2002 is priced at $42,000 per CPU and is set for release by the end
of the year.
