Push Portal Content to Mobile Users

October 15, 2002

For companies that have a portal deployed yet have a mobile or remote workforce with inadequate online access, BackWeb Technologies, San Jose, CA (www.backweb.com), offers a solution. ProactivePortal Server v2 extends popular portal environments such as Plumtree, SAP or WebSphere (the company says its portal agnostic) to actively deliver content over low-bandwidth networks.

BackWeb's updated "push" technology, called Polite, can download content automatically during network idle time. Byte-level refresh ensures that only changes to previously published documents are delivered rather than resending the entire document. For remote locations, Polite Neighborcast delivers documents over wide area networks to one PC; the documents are then distributed to all other PCs on a subnet. Graphical alerts that play on the desktop inform users that new content is available. Reporting features track users' interaction with content.
