Calgary Puts Forms Headaches on Ice

Kofax (www.kofax.com), Irvine, CA, and Cardiff (www.cardiff.com), Vista, CA, have teamed to provide the city of Calgary in Alberta, Canada, with an integrated scanning and data capture system. The city processes more than 1 million pages in its tax and assessment business units each year.

To capture these documents and forms, the city is using a variety of Fujitsu scanners equipped with Kofax's VRS image processing technology. VRS enhances image quality by deskewing, adjusting brightness and contrast and thresholding images for maximum detail. This improves recognition rates in downstream data capture steps.

Cardiff's TeleForm data capture technology is said to provide a consistent approach to processing survey forms returned to the agency by mail, fax and email. The system reads and interprets data from different source documents and feeds the data to a consolidated database.

"A single city technician can now process up to 1,500 documents per day with 99 percent data and process accuracy," stated Martin Wong, project manager for the city of Calgary. "Without these technologies, our productivity would be cut in half."
