TIS Takes on Italian and Indian Censuses

Italy's Institute of Statistics has selected eFlow from Top Image Systems (www.topimagesystems.com), Tel Aviv, Israel, and Carlsbad, CA, to capture, recognize and validate the data collected in the country's 2001 census.

Italy has a population of more than 56 million, and the census was one of the largest projects of its kind in Europe. Post-census processing commenced in early January 2002 and was reportedly fully operational within two weeks. TIS has two production centers, with each expected to capture as many as 3 million images per day. Fujitsu scanners are being used to scan the two-sided census forms. In total, TIS expects to process approximately 800 million images.

To capture data from the seven different types of Italian census forms, TIS is using its combination of advanced optical character recognition and intelligent character recognition technologies.

TIS was also recently chosen to process the 2002 census in India. With a population of more than 1 billion, India has one of the world's largest census projects. TIS has also managed data collection for census projects in Turkey and Kenya.
