Getting Hip to HIPAA

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act will change the way insurers handle medical records. A transaction standardization measure, taking effect in October 2002, will unify EDI standards. Privacy provisions for electronic records take effect in February 2003. A security initiative has yet to be finalized but is expected to set encryption and accessibility standards.

Data and document capture vendor Datacap (www.datacap.com) Tarrytown, NY, recently polled 10,000 health insurance professionals to find out how actively they're working to meet HIPAA requirements. The results suggest that preparedness varies widely.
