IBM Introduces Portal Infrastructure

IBM (www.ibm.com) in early October released Websphere Portal, an evolutionary product building on its Websphere User Experience and Lotus K-Station. The Somers, NY-based company is positioning the product as "portal infrastructure" for B2B, B2C or B2E portals.

Three levels of the portal are available. Websphere Portal Enable provides a basic portal platform. The Websphere Portal Extend Solution incorporates all the software in the Enable package and adds collaboration tools such as instant messaging, access to shared document libraries and shared discussions, and federated search. The Websphere Portal Experience Solution includes everything in the Extend package plus application sharing and electronic meeting functions like a digital whiteboard, content management and centralized security for all Web applications.
